This News Page will be updated to highlight forthcoming events -- please revisit the site to check on what's new. Visit to Glasgow 01 September 2010 Fin and Fraser competed in the Rya Scotland Champion Club Trophy at the weekend which took place at Bardowie Loch (Clyde Cruising Club) near Glasgow.
To take part you need to have at least 1 Optimist, 1 Topper and 1 Feva. We joined forces with other clubs from the north of Scotland and managed to come 2nd.
There were nearly 70 boats on the water with 29 of them being Toppers. The boys had to complete 3 races back to back. Needless to say they both slept well later .................... Fraser came 8th overall and Fin 17th.
Well done to both boys. Great experience was gained, and hopefully the zone championships which are being held at Helensburgh later this month, won't be quite so daunting!
Not So Lazy Sunday Sailaway 29 August 2010 Seven Boats Sail to Toscaig from Lochcarron

The "lazy Sunday" turned out to be anything but as we reefed down and had a brisk sail in a steady Northly breeze of 18-20knots which surprised us with gusts of over 30 knots from time to time.
As we rounded the point of Applecross Peninsula the sea became a bit choppy so we opted for a sheltered anchorage in Toscaig. Once there a pleasant hour or two was spent comparing one-another's boats before heading for home in quieter conditions.
The seven boats were Eydis, Island Girl, Sonas, The Rebel, Playtime, Mhojo and Meridian.
Ten minutes after setting off for the return trip Mhojo and crew managed to faff about after letting slip their tender and then letting slip their boathook in double quick time. When they regained composure and the lost articles the rest of the fleet had disappeared over the horizon!! Sunday Sailaway 29th August 29 August 2010 Lazy Sunday Sailaway 29th August

After a frenetic weekend regatta last week -- how about joining in a gentle sailaway on the Yachts? The plan will be to set off from the clubhouse at about 9.00a.m. to catch the tide out, with other yachts joining the Slumbay contingent along the way. Destination to be decided but might be Applecross, Toscaig, Crowlins, Poll Domhain, Broadford etc. Returning on the tide on Sunday evening.
If interested please let David Murray know. We will try to find spaces on boats for any member who would like tojoin. Samuel Sails On........ 27 August 2010 Congratulations to Samuel Parsons for being this weeks winner of LC Ted. Although we couldn't comlete a course (due to lack of wind), Samuel managed to get the furthest round the island.
woops! think the camera must have had water on the lens...
Regatta Results 22 August 2010 Findhorn Sailing Club Scoop the Trophies at Lochcarron Regatta on 21st and 22nd August!

(Some of the Sailors and helpers picured after the Prize-giving. Photo from Alex Ingram www.lochcarron.tv )
We were pleased to have 23 dinghies competing, 12 from our own club and 11 visitors form all over the Highlands. Racing was due to commence at 1.00p.m. on Saturday. Meridian (our committee boat) was in position and was registering winds of 20, gusting up to 30knots. After some deliberation the wind seemed to have subsided a little and the fleet tentatively took to the water. However it soon became obvious that the conditions were too much for proper racing. The rescue boats were occupied retrieving dinghies after the younger crews had been ferried ashore. Our postponment flag was flown and we waited for the wind to drop. By 3.30p.m. the gusts had subdued but conditions were still pretty rough. Two races were held and the crews on the Laser 2000 and Vision dinghies from Findhorn Club made their presence known by taking first and second places in each. That evening we spent a sociable night dining at the clubhouse, nursing our bruises and watching the wind subside to a good sailing breeze. Conditions on Sunday were excellent with a steady 15 knots of wind. The race officers arranged three further races in quick succession to complete the regatta.
Our local councillor, Biz Campbell kindly came to present the prizes.
Results:First was Ian Ellis and Garry Laing (Findhorn) in their Vision dinghy; second, Joe Galloway and William McTurk (Findhorn) in their Laser 2000, and third was Callum Ashcroft (Findhorn) in his Laser Radial. The Junior Winners were all from Lochcarron: First, Cameron Kitson-Jones in his Laser Radial (Cammalt Trophy); second Fraser Kitson-Jones in his Pico, and third Fin MacAuley-Smith in his Topper (Forrester Trophy). Finally Ian Ellis thanked Lochcarron Sailing Club for their hospitality and commented that not many clubs would have made them race in Saturday's conditions -- but he was glad that we did!
Hopefully someone (Bart?) will be able to post in some photos in the next day or two!! REGATTA 21 August 2010 Our Regatta this year will be on

Please come along and lend a hand - or a muscle - and help us to make space for the visiting regatta boats.
Tea and biccies provided - once you have cleared the park!
See you there! Lachlan Wins his first Race 18 August 2010 Lachlan wins "LC" on his first night racing!

This was our first Wednesday night sailing session after the school holidays. Eight dinghies took to the water and enjoyed light winds which gradually increased to produce some fine sailing in ideal conditions.

Andy searched for that pot of gold -- but found it must have sunk!

Dylan, Nick and Fraser enjoyed the Omega.

Robin and Paddy on the grey Pico.

Kenny and Andrew on the Yellow Pico.

Stephen and Christopher Toppering.

The Rain Cloud that didn't! Training Week 19 July 2010 Our training week was held on the first week of the school holidays. We were faced with very challenging weather which registered winds in excess of 40 knots with horizontal rain on Wednesday and Thursday. Despite this we ran several RYA courses; 44 juniors and 10 adults participated. In some cases we were able to complete the courses and award certificates, in others large parts of the courses were covered with some work on the water required to finish. As usual we ended the week by sailing 24 dinghies across to Attadale beach for a picnic. No sooner had we arrived than a prolonged Northerly squall hit the beach with freezing rain!! Sandwiches were quckl;y consumed and a few quick "warm up" games were played before a mass evacuation was performed. Thanks are due to Nigel and Hilary MacLeod who came to the rescue with their motor cruiser "Idis". They transported nearly twenty chittering children back to the safety of the club whilst another ten sought refuge on "Mhojo". The more experienced sailors then sailed back to the club to find the wind dropping and the sun coming out for the end of week ceremonies! The club was pleased to have the help of Robin Paris, the Scottish National Topper Squad Coach. He passed on lots of useful racing tips to our more advanced juniors during the week, but we were disappointed that we were unable to take full advantage of his expertise as the weather prevented any effective coaching on the water during his stay. Alba Endeavour Challenge with OYT Scotland 04 July 2010 Twelve junior members from the Club sailed on the Alba Endeavour from Kerrera to Tobermory, Loch Boisdale, Gairloch, Portree, Mallaig (via Canna) and back to Oban again last week. This was a week long trip on a former round the world racing yacht. During the week there were several sightings of Basking Sharks, and at least one Minke Whale was spotted. For many the highlights were sailing to Canna and back in a force six, and rounding Ardnamurchan point, close hauled, in a force eight!

(Fin, Robbie, Lucy, Izzy, Annie, Heather, Freya, Scott, Catriona, Niall, Beth, and Daniel pictured on deck in sunny Portree. They were accompanied by Joanna and Dave from the club and supervised by Staff of the OYTS Nick, Craig, Derek, and Dougie -- the skipper.)
All juniors acheived an RYA "Competant Crew" qualification and a good time was had by all. 30 June 2010 Four boats and 6 sailors enjoyed a gentle drift down the Loch this evening in search of the dolphins. Their patience was rewarded when the dolphins came to play on the far side of Slumbay Island.
Tonight's race was a simple first back to the beach. Winners were Liam and Matthew - largely due to their paddling skills!

Work Party 26 June 2010 There will be a work party at the sailing club this Saturday from around 12 noon. This is to get all boats ready for sail training week and to make sure that all else is spic and span! If you can lend a hand please come along and see us.
Many thanks! Checkout these photos! 23 June 2010 Just added -- click on the "Photography with Altitude" link (on the LINKS page) to see some great photos. Dylan Wins Again! 23 June 2010
Only three boats took part in this evenings race, not surprising on such a miserable day! After the Omega lead the race the whole way Dylan managed to sneak by them at the very last minute to win in his topper! Well done, Dylan! Plockton to Lochcarron Race Report 20 June 2010
Spinnakers Flying in Loch Carron.

(Asterix and Planet Express in a close tussle off Ardnaff)
Loch watchers may have been surprised to see a fleet of thirteen yachts racing down through Strome narrows last weekend. We decided to begin our yacht race on the 20th of June in Plockton and we invited the Plockton sailors to join us, followed by a social gathering at the clubhouse. We were delighted that so many yachts took part and we hope that we can continue to encourage visiting yachts to participate in our informal races. We all enjoyed the company of the dolphins who visited most of the yachts during their passage. (We hope to have more photos to add as soon as they become available)

Unfortunately the Commodores cup was unavailable for the award ceremony so the winners, Graham Smith and crew on Asterix had to be content with the "Commodores Teapot" instead.

Some of the visiting crews enjoying a light refreshment before making the trip home.

Fifteen minutes in: Amatory, Fizz, Asterix, Planet Express, Mhojo, Rebel, Hatalinqua (?sp), and Playtime. (From L to Right)

Nearing the finish: Asterix, Fizz, Rebel, Planet Express, and Amatory.

Planet Express, Rebel and Fizz.

Photo finish after over three hours racing! Planet Express and Rebel.
Many thanks to all the photographers -- you know who you are. Plockton to Lochcarron Yacht Race. 20 June 2010
Our next yacht race will be slightly different! We are planning to start the race in Plockton and race back down the Loch to finish in Lochcarron. All are invited and, in particular, it is hoped that some of our neighbours in Plockton will be able to join in.
We plan to meet on or around the Plockton pontoon at noon and start the race soon after. Hopefully Davie Johnson and Meridian will be back in time to act as Committee boat. High tide is at about 3.00pm. so we should have the tide with us and there should be a following tide too for boats returning to Plockton and Kishorn.

As usual or operating Channel will be 69 and the entry fee is a bottle of wine or £5.00 per boat. Consumption of the entry fee will take place at the clubhouse during which an informal prize giving will be held. Dylan and Liam take the Ted! 16 June 2010 Dylan and Liam give a home to "LC" the New Ted!
"Tesco" declared that he wanted to go back to his day job on Mhojo and the Club has a new member in the form of "LC" who sports a custom made jumper.
The winds had sprung up on Wednesday but this did not deter Dylan and Liam who worked well as a team to take the honour of playing host to LC for the first time.

(Congratulations boys... how many times is it that Liam has appeared in these pages now?) Liam and Chris win Tesco Ted 11 June 2010
Liam and Chris were the proud winners of Tesco Ted for their outstanding sailing in testing conditions on Wednesday night - not one capsize! Sadly Tesco Ted was languishing in Plockton but the trophy acted as a stylish substitute.

Ella wins the second yacht race 10 June 2010
John Murphy and crew with the Commodore's Cup after winning the second yacht race. Fun in the Sun 07 June 2010 The recent Family/Try a Boat Day was a huge success, with sun and a moderate breeze all day, giving us perfect sailing conditions.
The day was greatly supported by both locals and visitors wishing to try sailing for the first time, and in some cases overcoming a fear of sailing itself.
We had two Cruisers offering a taste of sailing on bigger boats, and our thanks go to Graham and Kevin for making this available.
Other boats out on the water included the Wayfarer World, Omega, GP14, Iso, Picos and Toppers. Thanks to all the Instructors, Shore Organisers and Safety Boat Crew for making this such an enjoyable and safe experience.
Thanks must also go to all the 'chefs' for providing such a great BBQ, and to all those who kindly donated a wonderful assortment of baking goodies.
There was a lot of preparation beforehand, both in the clubhouse and in the dinghy park, and many thanks to all involved.

A New Winner for Tesco Ted 04 June 2010 Angus was not about to be beaten in his Byte!
There was stiff competition over the three races that were held on Wednesday. There was a smaller fleet than usual with only five dinghies competing, but this led to much more closely contested starts and some excellent challenges on the beat to windward and on the downwind leg.
Angus had one third and two firsts which placed him just ahead of Fraser and Mathew in their Pico (One first and two second places.). Well done lads!
Fin Wins Again! 29 May 2010 Congratulations to Fin on winning for the second consecutive week and holds on to the increasingly popular 'Tesco Ted'.
There were attempts at protesting - but not successful.
There would have been pictures of the race if my camera had been charged before hand!
It was very close between Fin (Topper) and Angus (Comet) , and Andy and Jo in the Wayfarer were giving it their best shot. Not far behind was Dylan (Topper). Unfortunately for the Buzz, they never quite made the start!
Well done to all who took part, and good luck for next week.

Lochcarron Yacht Race 23rd May 23 May 2010
(Forty seconds to the start and three boats are spilling wind to avoid being across the line too early)
Our first Loch Carron Yacht Race of 2010 was held in inner Loch Carron and must have looked quite colourful from the shore, with most boats flying their multicoloured spinnakers on the down-wind stretch to Attadale shore.
Six yachts participated and it soon became obvious that the lighter conditions were suiting Steve Patch in "Planet Express" better than last week.

(Planet Express in full flow)
He and his crew had some close racing with Bart MacFleat and crew in his new Fulmar "The Rebel" and Rob Teago's crew on "Amatory".

(The Rebel)
"The Rebel" took line honours but on handicap the result was first "Amatory", second "Planet Express", third "The Rebel", fourth "Mhojo" (Dave Murray and crew), fifth "Playtime" (the Kitson-Jones's) and sixth Doug Angus and crew in "Pegasus". As has become traditional, we then gathered at the clubhouse for a celebratory cup of tea -- or something stronger.

(The winner Amatory)

(Playtime and Mhojo doing their best to keep up)

(The crew of Pegasus believed they had taken "line honours" but it was later explained that they had done two laps while the rest of us had done three!)

(Rob Teago telling an attentive crowd how it is done!)
Many thanks to Carol for taking the photos! It just goes to prove that if you take 175!!!! some of them will turn out OK! First Lochcarron Yacht Race of the Season 23 May 2010 Don't forget our first Lochcarron Yacht Race this Sunday. Meet at the clubhouse at 12 noon. See you there?

The forecast is for light winds and some sunshine. Bit of a contrast to the Kishorn Cup then! Competition Hots up for the Wednesday Fun Race. 19 May 2010 Fin wins Tesco in a fiercly contested battle!

(Iona and Fin can't decide who should look after Tesco tonight.)
We had some excellent competition in our Wednesday night night fun races this evening. A light breeze allowed some tight starts and one or two close calls on Port/Starboard. The Buzz cut through the fleet and was sailed competitively by Fraser, Nick and Kenny, but in the end Fin won the day by consistent boat handling, good racing technique and a judicious protest! Kishorn Cup Report 16 May 2010 Five yachts competed for the Kishorn Cup on Saturday.
A "Pursuit Race" with a staggered start gave the slower handicapped boats a head start on the faster ones. John Murphy's Contessa 26 "Ella" started first, followed by Steve Patch's UFO 31 "Planet Express", then Graham Smith's Beneteau 285, "Asterix" and finally then the two Fulmars of Kevin Kitson-Jones and Dave Murray, "Playtime" and "Mhojo".
Most yachts were heavily reefed to cope with the Force 5/6 Westerly winds which produced particularly steep seas on the North shore of the loch. We recorded gusts of up to 32 knots (apparent) and most crews were severely tested by the conditions. All the yachts completed the race and a very close finish saw John Murphy in Ella (just) retain his pole postion to take the Kishorn cup. Graham Smith and crew ran a very close 2nd and were justly pleased with that result as their first ever race in Asterix. Dave Murray (Mhojo) came third , Steve Patch (Planet Express) fourth and Kevin Kitson-Jones (Playtime) fifth.

(John Murphy is presented with the Cup by Commodore Cathy Kitson-Jones.)
Afterwards we rafted together with David Johnson on Meridian and had a splendid barbeque hosted by Lillian with her assistants Sheila and John MacPherson.

The evening ran on into the twilight hours with some of the boats opting to remain rafted up for the night. A good time was had by all.

Kishorn Cup 15 May 2010 Mark your diary now! The Kishorn Cup will commence at 11.00a.m. on Saturday 15th May.
Will it be as exciting as last year?
We can expect to see Steve's new UFO 31, Bart's new Fulmar and Graham's new Beneteau First 285 as well as most of our "old timers". This family race is open to all comers and has an emphasis on friendly competition and cameraderie. Skipper's briefing will be 10:15 with an 11am start. The race will be a pursuit and, weather allowing, will be two laps of the course. Visiting yachts £5 entry fee and please bring handicap notification with you - or let us have it before the race.
Yachts can anchor in the bay to the south of the fish farm - near the pontoons (opposite Kishorn Yard and Ferguson's). The briefing will be at Allt Beag - white cottage directly above the fish farm and entry forms can be completed here. Following the race there will be a sailaway and BBQ to which all boats are invited - please bring something to cook!
For any enquiries, please call Graham 01520 733 459 or John 01520 733 243
See you there!

This was last year's start. Now, who would you say had right of way?
I rest my case. Chilly Wednesday but Great Turnout. 12 May 2010 Fourteen Dinghies and 26 sailors braved the Icy Winds this Wednesday !
Congratulations to all who participated .. there was a strongish West wind and an air temperature of about 5 degrees. Despite this we had a great time and ran a couple of short fun races. Fraser was spot on,on his starts. This proved just how important starts are as he won both races easily.

(Tesco returns to the Kitson-Jones household once more!)
A special mention must go to Robin and Ruaridh who successfully sailed after a Topper which had made a bid for freedom. They expertly picked it up and sailed it back to the fold. Thanks lads! Plockton Sailing Club Open Day 12 May 2010 Our Neighbours in Plockton are holding an open Day this Saturday. Those who are not competing in the Kishorn cup this weekend will be made most welcome. Begins 10.00a.m. remember to take your sailing gear with you.
There will be an opportunity to try out Assymetric "RS" dinghies and hear more about the Ocean Youth Trust Activities.

Check out their website here: www.plockton-sailing.com
I'd be there if I wasn't racing!
(Sorry I couldn't download the poster) Seven boats take part in Fun Racing tonight. 05 May 2010 Liam holds Tesco for two weeks running!
Two Picos, two Toppers, a Wayfarer, a Buzz and a GP 14 with a total of fifteen sailors, some young and some not quite so young, took part in our fun race tonight in a light but chilly North wind. There were some rule infringements and some questionable mark roundings, but two very short races were held and the times aggregated to produce a clear winner....

Alexander and Liam won the honour of looking after Tesco for the next week. (Unfortunately Alexander had gone home before the prize giving so Bunny took his place in the photo!! The Race That Never Was 02 May 2010 It all started so well.................but the wind died and the race had to be abandonned!

Better luck next time. Wednesday Winners 29 April 2010 Liam and Mathew take Tesco home tonight!

We had an exciting training evening today, with a strong, squally, South Westerly wind. Most sailors had the chance to practice their capsize drills and we even had a Runaway Rescue Boat to deal with. Liam and Mathew kept smiling throughout and thereby earned the right to look after Tesco for the week.
Congratulations to Robin and Ruaridh who were the only crew who stayed the course and avoided swimming! Frozen North Challenge 25 April 2010 LOCH MORLICH SAILING CLUB
Frozen North Challenge
Sunday 25th April 2010 Briefing 12:00h

3 races back to back
I'm told the ice has gone but water cold from the snow melt!!!! Wednesday Afternoon Fun Racing Begins 21 April 2010 As this picture shows, Scott was the first winner of our new Fun Race Series. The winner is allowed to look after "Tesco Ted" for a whole week. Already a strong bond has been formed and it may be difficult to prise these two apart next week. The challenge is there ... who will win Tesco next?

The Toppers and Picos had an enjoyable time in the light winds, but Scotts laser won the day. He may have to be handicapped next week.

The three man crew made it look easy to sail the Buzz -- until they capsized!

The rescue crews could only sit back and watch......
But the big question was -- how did Crisdean manage to avoid having his photo taken??? Sunday Racing 18 April 2010 Here is a picture from Alex Ingram of last Sunday's race.
(Copyright Alex Ingram www.lochcarron.tv )
Hard to believe but, yes, Cathy is in the lead round the first mark - but not for long. In her moment of joy, she lacks concentration and is inexplicably overtaken by Steve in his Phantom. Hard on his heels are Cameron with his crew Fin and Fraser in the Buzz and Jenny and Scott in their Lasers. Lost property! 02 November 2009 Do you recognise any of this stuff? ....

There are five good hats, two (and a half!) pairs of gloves, two pairs of boots, a spray top and socks and undergarments too many to mention. They are in the old cabin.. just pop by this weekend to pick them up. And while you're there, why not stay to help with our Autumn lay up and general tidying?
See you there? De-Rigging Work Party 24 October 2009 DE-RIGGING AND GENERAL WORK PARTY
On the 24th and 25th October we will be de-rigging all the boats and putting them to bed for the winter. There is also a fair amount of work to be done to ensure that the Clubhouse and cabin are in good order ready for the winter - Terry is compiling a list of jobs to suit all ages and skills so any help would be welcome. We aim to start at 11.00am on both days. Final Fling 07 October 2009

Next Wednesday 7th October will be an evening of fun and games, on and off the water, starting at 4.30. This will be followed by a barbecue at the Clubhouse. All club members are welcome and contributions of baking would be greatly appreciated.

Well done to all and a special thank you to Carol for organising the course and along with Jenny, for supplying the ever essential soup and toasties. Final Yacht Race 13 September 2009
Our Final Yacht Race of the season was held on Sunday 13th September.
This was a race with a twist -- Doug Angus was organising this one and he decided to run it as a "Pursuit Race". This meant that Pegasus had an eighteen minute start over the fastest boats in the fleet ... but did it do him any good? ....... Read on to find out.
The race was sailed in ideal conditions with three laps of the loch lasting roughly two hours which was the designated time for the race to run.
Eight boats participated with the faster boats (on handicap at least) having to catch-up the slower boats before the allocated two hours had elapsed.
On each lap all eight boats had to pass through the start/finish line which was laid just off Meridian. This became increasing difficult to achieve as a two to three knot tide set up across the line much to delight of the audience on the committee boat and chagrin of the skippers as they battled against decreasing odds.
(Some even opted to scrape past the bouy and accept a 360 degree turn as a penalty.)
The pursuit race system seemed to work well as five of the competitors crossed the finish line within five minutes of one another -- this was particularly exciting against the tide. A special mention should be made of Pointer who sailed a blinding last tack and overtook at least two boats in the last minute.
The photo below shows Pointer and Amatory on the broad reach heading towards Attadale.

Steve Patch in Scamander was the first (but not the only one) to overtake Pegasus.

Scamander took an impressive first place with Rob Teago and crew in Amatory coming in second.

The fleet seemed scattered at first but closed up at the end. Gunn Report. 12 September 2009 Unfortunately, for various reasons no other club was able to field a team for this year's Gunn Trophy event.
l
Six of our best sailors were rigged, dressed in their sailing gear and ready to race when we realised that there was no competition! Undaunted we had a great day of sailing in Toppers. First our six juniors raced whith great determination and competitiveness, then we went ashore for an excellent barbeque.
Then the parents/ adults showed just how competative they can be -- with much shouting, contested mark roundings and (some of us) even doing penalty turns -- when it was alleged that they had scuffed a mark!

Next the juniors raced the adults and the adults raced the juniors, and meantime the sound system on Mhojo was blaring out encouraging music. It was Mediteranean on the water and it was as good as any Sunsail Holiday (except we were stifling in drysuits!).

Overall the official winner was, of course, Cameron! However, we felt we were all winners as we had such a great time and some of the juniors and the adults had the best racing they had ever had in dinghies....! The Gunn Trophy Event 12 September 2009
